Table of Contents

Moab is located in southern Utah. It’s about 4 hours south of Salt Lake City and about 2 hours west of grand junction, colorado.

Where is moab?

Moab is the perfect place to ditch the big wedding and just go for it! Imagine saying your vows on a red rock cliff, with endless desert views and no distractions, just you two, totally in the moment. No stress, no crowd, just adventure and epic scenery.

Why should you elope in moab?

Choose a Moab Elopement Location

Arches National park

With it’s towering arches and intricate rock formations, arches national park is a top choice for a moab elopement.

One of the most important steps when planning an elopement is choosing a location. From arches national park to dead horse point and BLM land, moab has a variety of scenery to choose from.

Where to Elope in Moab:

Pros:
+ The arches provide shade allowing for more even lighting throughout the day
+ permits are easy to obtain

cons:
+ during the summer the park can get extremely crowded and hot
+ sunset is usually crowded

Canyonlands National park

If you dream of saying your vows on the edge of a cliff, looking out into a vast canyon, canyonlands national park may be the moab elopement location for you.

Pros:
+ Less crowded than arches national park
+ permits are easy to obtain

cons:
+ during the summer the park can get extremely hot
+ Not much variety

Dead horse point state park

If you like the look of canyonlands national park but are looking for a cheaper park entrance fee, dead horse point state park is one of my absolute favorite moab elopement locations.

Pros:
+ Beautiful lookout
+ good sunrise & sunset location

cons:
+ none!

Outside the parks

If you're looking to skip the crowds of the parks, there are plenty of beautiful locations around moab. Some of my favorite spots include castle valley and BLM land.

Pros:
+ Less busy
+ variety of locations

cons:
+ none!

Moab Elopement Permits

One of the biggest advantages of planning an adventure elopement over a traditional wedding is the venue cost. in 2024 the average cost of a wedding venue in the united states was $14,000!!

when you elope in moab you only need to pay for a permit, photographer and you get to get married in an absolutely breathtaking place!

each location in moab has a different permitting process and system, here's how to get one and how much it will cost you.

Arches National Park Special Use Permit:

When eloping at arches national park you’ll need to apply for a special use permit. They require you to submit a request at least 4 weeks in advance in order to process your request in time. The application fee for a wedding permit is $185 and needs to be requested by the couple getting married. (they do not allow photographers to apply for the permit on your behalf) You can find more information and apply for a permit on the national park service website.

Canyonlands National Park Special Use Permit:

Canyonlands national park requires the same exact process as arches national park. Make sure you’re applying at least 4 weeks in advance! The application fee is also $185 and must be requested by the couple getting married. You can find more information and apply for a permit on the national park service website.

Dead Horse Point State Park Special Use Permit:

If an elopement ceremony is taking place the state park requires a permit, it costs $60. If no actual ceremony and legal signage is done within the park you do not need to apply or pay for a permit. Most of my couples that elope in dead horse point opt for a “bridal” style session and sign their marriage certificate outside of the park. For more information check out dead horse point state park’s website.

Outside of the Parks Special Use Permits:

Depending on what location you are wanting to elope at outside the park you may or may not need a permit. Most of the locations I recommend do not require them. However it’s extremely important that you do your research on the specific area you are eloping in to make sure that a permit isn’t required.

Entry Fees & Passes:

If you are eloping in a national park or state park you have to pay the park entrance fee in addition to the permit fee. If you book me as your elopement photographer, on the day of your wedding i’ll hop in your car and we can use my national park and state park pass to enter the parks. If you’re wanting to get your own pass to do some exploring the week of your wedding you can find more info here.

Best time of year to Elope in moab

The great thing about moab is that the weather is usually mild year round. While you can elope in moab any time of the year, my favorite times of year for a moab elopement are spring and fall. these months tend to be less crowded and not as hot (in the summer) and have a lower chance of snow (in the winter).

Where to stay in moab

There are plenty of cute airbnb's and nice hotels in town. if you're wanting more of an adventure, there are some amazing glamping experiences in the area.

Frequently Asked questions about eloping in moab

Can we have guests at our elopement?

Absolutely! But keep in mind, in the parks guest counts may be limited.

Whatever you feel best in! If you want dramatic photos make sure you have flowy clothes. I also highly recommend comfortable, sturdy shoes as the rocks can be slippery.
