The Salt Flats in Utah are absolutely EPIC! They are definitely one of the coolest places to elope in Utah. I’ve been shooting at the Salt Flats for years and I’ve compiled EVERYTHING you need to know on how to elope there!
The Bonneville Salt Flats are located 1.5 hours from Salt Lake City and they are accessible by car. The easiest way to get onto the salt flats is by going to the International Raceway. Once you’re on the salt flats you are good to drive wherever you want! Just make sure to be safe and not drive too far away in case you get stuck!
The salt flats are EXTREMELY salty!! You have been warned hahah, that being said I highly recommend stopping by a car wash on the way back to get rid of all the salt build up. The salt flats can also get flooded (especially in the spring time) make sure to check out the live cam feed before you go!
What time of day should I go? The photos in this blog post were all shot at sunset. There is absolutely NO shade at the Bonneville Salt Flats. The best time of day to go is either sunrise or sunset, if you go in the middle of the day you will have horrible light.
What time of year should I go? The salt flats are typically good every time of year! As long as it’s not 110 or 25 degrees, you shouldn’t have any issues. Although, fall is typically the best time to elope at the salt flats; it’s usually not too hot or cold and not as busy as summertime.
To legally elope at the Bonneville Salt Flats you’ll need to get a marriage license in the state of Utah. You can apply at a county clerk’s office either online or in person and then stop to pick up your marriage license in person. The closest offices to the salt flats are in Salt Lake City and West Wendover.
To get legally married in the state of Utah you need an officiant to sign your marriage license. You can hire someone to be your officiant OR if you book an elopement package with me I’m already ordained so it comes included in your elopement package! You also need two witnesses to sign your marriage license, feel free to ask friends or we can go find any two adults throughout your wedding day!
When planning an epic elopement you need to find an epic photographer!
